Hong Kong: my favourite restaurant

People in Hong Kong are spoiled for choice when it comes to restaurants. In fact, the number of options can be overwhelming. This, coupled with the fact that visitors may only be in the city for a few days, can lead to mass panic with the result that you either: (a) have to mortgage your house again because you just picked the most expensive place and got a taste for the hairy crab tongue mousse*; (b) ate at an OK place the first night and then went back for every other meal because you couldn't face the risk of eating somewhere worse; or (c) just ate Maccas. Hong Kong does have its own version of Zoomato or whatever the latest restaurant rating app is, called Open Rice. However, Hong Kongers are obsessed with food and this can mean reviews go into excruciating detail for even the most simple restaurant. Worse, every reviewer has their own incredibly complex and obscure rating system. They're like: "I give this restaurant 12.75 rambutans", and you're like "WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN, JANICE?!! I HAVE NO REFERENCE POINT FOR THIS! I'M GOING TO MACCAS!".

*Not a thing... or is it?!

So to throw my hat in the ring, my favourite Hong Kong restaurant, is .... drumroll.... Rakuen!

Rakuen is a Japanese izakaya-style restaurant, which specialises in Okinawan food. It also has delicious draught beer straight from Japan. The most well known dish is green caviar, which is a type of deep-sea seaweed which is only really grown around the islands of Okinawa. I'm not saying this stuff is why the Okinawans live to 100, but you can never be too careful so safest to order a bowl. It tastes ... healthy?

The other dishes are all solid performers. Don't expect to be blown away, but do expect a laid back restaurant, where you're unlikely to have to wait for a table, the food is consistently good and the beer is awesome. Also, it is open til 2am!
